Event 3: Fact or Opinion? Who Decides What’s News?

The IWA Cardiff Media Summit 2021 is a series of four events commencing 11th January 2021, focusing on the new landscape for media in Wales.

This, the third event in the series, will focus on news in Wales.

Traditional news organisations are finding new ways to deliver content in the face of diminishing revenues and increased competition from online providers. At the same time they are increasingly coming under attack from politicians across the spectrum for perceived bias.

The end result is that trust in the media as a whole has been undermined. Is there a danger that consumers will shop around for a news source which just tells them what they want to hear?

The long established challenges for Wales’ media and its perceived ‘democratic deficit’ can be better understood when seen in the context of global trends in media production, consumption, and the threats from social media and disinformation.

So, how can we support independent and trustworthy news at a national and local level in Wales? Can Wales’ politicians and government be a strong voice within the UK for regulation which protects citizens from disinformation?

Panellists:

  • Ifan Morgan Jones, Editor, Nation.Cymru
  • Geraint Evans, News and Current Affairs Commissioner, S4C
  • Emma Meese, Director of Community Journalism, JOMEC

Attendees will be able to engage in debate and ask questions on the live chat.
