“Brain Drain or Growing Wings: should more be done to ensure Welsh students study in Wales?”

in partnership with Cardiff University

The Cardiff University – IWA debate series brings together researchers, policymakers and practitioners to discuss topical issues at the heart of politics, society and the economy in Wales. Challenging assumptions and offering fresh thinking, the sessions support informed policymaking through constructive and engaging debate.

Is Wales in the grip of a ‘brain drain’? Figures from the Resolution Foundation in 2017 suggested we were, with thousands more graduates leaving Wales than arriving between 2013 and 2016. Has that changed with recent socio-economic factors? Should we be doing more to incentivise young Welsh people to study and live in Wales? Or does Wales benefit more from our young people leaving our borders to gain knowledge and experience to then hopefully bring the fruits of their labours home?
