Wales: A Work in Progress: Devolution across the UK – Comparing the Nations

Our series of events will explore the key debates around the constitutional and democratic future of Wales.

Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each have unique devolution settlements with the UK Government. In practice this can have drastic implications for not only the nations’ governments and parliaments, but critically, their people, too.

In this conversation we will be addressing how Wales’ devolution settlement compares with elsewhere in the UK. Importantly, we will also be evaluating how this comparison can inform where Wales goes from here.

To examine the settlements, we are joined by Akash Paun, Programme Director at the Institute for Government (IfG), where he leads the IfG’s devolution work. Akash also sits as an Expert Panel Member of the Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales.

We will look at:

  • What the gaps are in Wales’ current settlement?
  • What we can learn from other parts of the UK?
  • Where does the evidence suggest Wales needs more powers to improve delivering for the nation?
  • Where do we go from here?

This discussion is part of the IWA’s Wales: A work in Progress series. The IWA’s Constitutional Future Project is supported by the Legal Education Foundation.
