Professor Karen Holford

Pro Vice-Chancellor at Cardiff University’s College of Physical Sciences, Prof Holford has worked and studied in field of engineering for 33 years, much of it at the leading edge of scientific discovery.

Taking her engineer father’s love and enthusiasm for his trade, she has used it to enlighten and excite the next generation of scientists and engineers by demonstrating the critical nature it plays in our modern world throughout every aspect of society.

Dr Anwen Williams on behalf of PUSH Group, Cardiff University

Dr Williams’ world has underpinned the bulk of arthritis research in Cardiff over the past 20 years.

During this time she has collaborated with others both locally and abroad, integrating her scientific expertise and technological advancements in the areas of biology, chemistry, maths. immunology, bio-chemistry and pharmacology to deliver first rate findings and secure significant external funding.

She’s also integral in getting Arthritis Research UK to establish a prestigious centre of excellence in bio-mechanics and bio-engineering in the Welsh capital.

Professor Khalid Al-Begain

With his origins in computing and communications technologies, Professor Khalid cutting edge work on the development of 2G and 3G wireless networks saw him become one of only 500 British scientists to receive royal recognition for his contributions to this country’s scientific community.

Recognising the profound effects advances in such things as mobile phone apps have on our daily lives, he is also developing sensor-based technologies to automate the diagnosis of early on-set dementia and to assist independent living for those affected.
