Rachael Webb – Educator

Rachael Webb is the winner of the Educator category, sponsored by WJEC

A teacher since 1988, Ms Webb’s vision began seven years ago when she became headteacher at Hafod Primary, going to great pains to ensure the children in her care could enjoy learning in an exciting and stimulating environment.

Promoting tolerance and inclusion, pupils are instilled with advice on the best way to settle disputes without resorting to anger or violence,

Based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Webb’s policies have proved influential and been highly commended.

“I see Hafod as a microcosm of a peaceful world. Ghandi’s quote – ‘be the change you want to see in the world’ – is impressed on pupils from the very outset of their time at the school, and is central to my vision.

Children enjoy learning in an exciting, stimulating environment that promotes tolerance and inclusion. Every part of the school is inspiring and thought provoking. Colour is also a focal point as it stimulates the brain and brings about well-being for pupils.

Word has spread about the good practice at Hafod, and as a result the First Minister Carwyn Jones, Education Minister Leighton Andrews have visited, and there have been regular visits from other educational establishments.”
